Reducing the car pool by 80 percent: – Important to achieve our climate goals

Sustainability is one of the key drivers when Norwegian companies switch from owned and leased cars to car sharing. – The goal is zero emissions and zero waste by 2030, says the car manager at Telia.
SATISFIED: – The transition to Hyre has been pain-free, says Bjørn Grov, car and property manager at Telia.

At Telia, sustainability and environmental protection are high priorities, which became clear when the company moved into its new headquarters at Økern Portal in 2021. Here, there is a consistent green approach, with everything from office chairs to wallpaper being reused, and furniture made from employees' old clothes!

As Bjørn Grov, the company’s car and property manager, says:

“It felt very natural to rethink our approach to cars and car usage when we moved here.”

BÆREKRAFTIG: – Bildeling er viktig for at vi skal nå klimamålene våre, sier Bjørn Grov i Telia. Bilen han sitter i, kan erstatte 10 til 15 privatbiler.

Car sharing became the solution

Grov explains that Telia works hard to reduce driving to and from work, encourage cycling and walking, and cut parking spaces.

At the same time, employees need cars for customer meetings, inspections, and other tasks during working hours. The solution was car sharing through Hyre.

– Today, we have around 115 employees connected to our corporate account with Hyre, a number that is growing rapidly. Here at Økern, we have a fixed car pool of 15 cars that we aim to reduce by 80 percent, he says, adding:

– We’ve already reduced the number of company cars from 240 to under 100, and half of these are electric cars.

By 2026, Telia will not own a single fossil-fuel car.

– We are well on track. The main goal is zero emissions and waste by 2030, and car sharing is crucial for us to achieve this, Bjørn Grov states.

Mobility plan for businesses: Replace your own car fleet

Did you know that the main source of CO2 emissions for today’s cars is the actual production of the car? Therefore, reducing the number of cars on the road is the most important thing we can do to reduce emissions. One shared car replaces up to 15 private cars, and based on life cycle analyses done on electric cars, we get a 92% CO2 savings if you replace one private electric car with one shared electric car.

Driving less

– Car sharing undoubtedly contributes to more environmentally friendly mobility. One shared car can actually replace up to 15 private cars, says Vibeke Nenseth, sociologist and senior researcher at the Institute of Transport Economics (TØI).

Together with her colleague Ingunn Opheim Ellis, she has prepared a TØI report that looks at experiences and effects of car sharing in Bergen. A report that shows that car sharing is good for public health, city air, the climate, and the city.

– An average private car is stationary 98 percent of the time – and takes up space that could be used for other, more socially beneficial things. Moreover, it turns out that those who use a shared car instead of their own car drive 30 percent less, she says.

Fewer cars being produced

Christer Viksaas Grandal, business advisor at Hyre, says that there is one factor in particular that makes car sharing a sustainable choice:

“It’s about utilizing resources better. An electric car is better than a fossil-fuel car, but it doesn’t help the climate balance to buy an electric car that is hardly used.”

Every new electric car produced has a negative impact on the environment due to high emissions in the production phase.

– Car sharing contributes to fewer cars being produced. At the same time, we drive less overall, as the TØI report shows. This suggests that car sharing also makes people more aware of their transportation habits, says Grandal.

Businesses and individuals share cars

Grandal believes the key to an effective car-sharing model is that individuals and businesses share the same cars.

– Just as private cars don’t need to be idle between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., company cars also don’t need to be a dead resource that gathers dust and takes up space every afternoon, weekend, and holiday.

When more people share the same cars, costs are also kept down.

– Already, companies can halve their car costs by switching to car sharing, he says.

The future of car ownership

At Økern Portal, a completely new residential area is also being developed. Bjørn Grov sees the outlines of the future of car ownership.

– The cars we use during the day are picked up by residents in the neighboring building in the afternoon. Public transport is also important. An employee comes here by subway in the morning and then takes a Hyre car if they have customer meetings in the middle of the day.

– Or they can pick up a car near their home office, he adds.

The plan is for more Telia offices to start using Hyre soon.

– The response from employees at Økern has been entirely positive, so we look forward to expanding to Kristiansand, Bergen, Stavanger, and Trondheim, says Grov.

5 reasons why companies choose car sharing

Car sharing is good for both the wallet and the environment, and with a mobility plan from Hyre, your company gains even more control over car costs. Here are five of the most important reasons why companies are cutting their own car fleets in favor of car sharing.

  • Adapted to the new workday: With increased use of remote work, it’s less relevant to have cars permanently stationed at the office. More meetings are held online, and many start their day from home.
  • Less administration: When the company doesn’t own cars, there’s no need to spend time managing the car fleet. All maintenance and operation are handled by Hyre.
  • Cars near the office: Does your company have parking spaces today? Hyre would love to rent them! This way, you generate income from the parking space, and more cars become available near the office.
  • Fixed, low prices: With a fixed low monthly price, the company keeps full control over costs while gaining increased flexibility with only a 12-month commitment. By limiting access to weekday use, prices can be up to 50 percent lower than traditional leasing.
  • Sustainability: One shared car can replace up to 15 private cars, significantly reducing emissions while contributing to more space for people, housing, and green areas.
