Alna District with a Car Sharing Pilot Project – Hyre Delivers Everything We Requested

Car sharing will be an important tool as Oslo Municipality aims to reduce carbon emissions by 95% by 2030. Since January 4th this year, the employees at the District Office in Alna have been sharing fourteen electric cars from Hyre.

- Emissions from vehicles and construction machinery make up around 65% of the municipality's total emissions. That's why the City Council has adopted an action plan to ensure we have an emissions-free and shared vehicle fleet by 2025, says Geir Rossebø, team leader for climate and environment at the Development and Competence Agency (UKE) in Oslo Municipality.

UKE is responsible for following up and coordinating the measures, and Rossebø says they are already well underway. First up: Car sharing in Alna District.

- From January 4th, we have been collaborating with Alna District on a pilot project where 130 employees at the District Office in Furuset are sharing 14 electric cars from Hyre. This is the first time we are systematically testing car sharing at the district level. We are excited to see what impact this has on time, money, the environment, and convenience for the employees, he says.

Rossebø says the municipality views car sharing as an important tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

- Car sharing contributes to fewer cars on the road, frees up space that can be used for other purposes, and reduces the production of new vehicles. For Alna District, it specifically means we can make better use of the cars, and they can also be used by private individuals after work hours, he explains.

At the same time, this is not just an environmental initiative. The pilot project will also show whether car sharing makes practical and economic sense:

- Hyre has delivered everything we requested in terms of price, availability, and an electric vehicle fleet. Hopefully, this pilot project is just the beginning, says Rossebø.

A Good Start – Exciting Road Ahead

The pilot project launched on January 4th this year. So far, the feedback from users has been entirely positive.

- We had a successful introductory meeting where we went through practical questions, and my impression is that the transition has gone very smoothly. Each employee can book a car in the app and drive off. We take care of all the practical aspects like keys, cleaning, tire changes, and EU inspections, says Lise Wright, customer manager at Hyre.

She is looking forward to the future:

- It's really cool to be underway with Alna District, and we have great confidence that we can take the experiences from this pilot project and scale it up to introduce car sharing in more districts and departments.
